COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS: Regular screening eye camps are conducted outside the hospital in a radius of 150 kilometers. The patients chosen for surgery are picked up in the Hospital mini bus and transported to the hospital for surgery. After surgery they are dropped back at the campsite in the same bus. There is a screening camp in the hospital. Poor patients are given free consultation and if they require surgery they are operated upon free of cost. These camp patients are provided free food and medicines during their stay in the hospital. This program has been running for many decades.
SCHOOL SCREENING: A team goes out to different schools and examines the students. With the aid of charts and pictures they explain to the children about ocular hygiene. They also instruct the teachers about detecting common eye problems. Those found with any problems are asked to come to the hospital for detailed examination. Children with Vitamin A deficiency are given Vitamin A tablets on the spot. This program also has been running for many years.
The program is given top priority, as children are our future. Under this program, more than 100 children with various types of cataract underwent surgery with Intraocular lens implantations apart from distribution of glasses.
HEALTH EDUCATION: Patients who attend the hospital especially the ones who are admitted for surgery, are given health talks regarding nutrition, hygiene, and eye care. This is also done in camps both outside and inside the hospital. In future there are plans to invite teachers, service clubs, ophthalmic assistants and others on different days for a crash course on detecting ocular problems.
